After living in both a rental house and also in own house, I can write a small review of their pros and cons from my own experience.
When we first bought a house, we felt very elevated. The joy of living alone and having our own independence was a great gratifying factor. We could go around the house, fix things, and renovate according to our own tastes.
One big relief was parking facilities. We could park the cars of our guests freely, go to the lawn in the breeze, and listen to music, do a little gardening, grow our own vegetables, barbecue etc. It was a great psychological satisfaction.
This we did for about 6 years. We enjoyed lawn moving in the first one or two years. But then because of the shortage of time, we could not keep pace and it got slow. Clearing of snow was good in the beginning, but latter on it became a burden. This was especially so after heavy snowfall.
At times it was painful. For example, when there was a water leak in the basement, it was hard to fix it. If you don’t know any handyman or any other reliable skilled person, it could turn out to be quite ugly. There are many companies and independent professionals who do home repairs. But our experience is that very few of them are honest and straightforward.
We found that many home professionals can really take one on a ride. One has to be careful. Emergency help is mostly needed in case of plumbing and electricity work. That is when these professionals exploit home owners the most.
Over time I developed a list of plumbing professionals, handymen, electricians, glass repairers and the like. I then used to call for quotes, if it was not an emergency work. That is how I saved myself many a times.
Over time, I also learned a little bit of work. That was another relief.
